Teaching students to recognize cause and effect relationships in text helps students understand and remember what they are reading. Modeling discovery of these relationships in a text and recording them on a graphic organizer helps students visualize and understand the cause-effect relationship.
This lesson provides student reference pages that can be enlarged to poster size anchor charts for the classroom for teacher modeling of the skill. Three anchor charts are included to provide a student friendly progression through the various cause-effect relationships along with corresponding graphic organizers.
In addition, the lesson includes three cause and effect worksheets with answer keys. Students identify cause and effect in context, recognize and record clue words, and identify a chain reaction cause and effect relationship from a passage.
Center activity cards and recording sheets allow students to apply the reading skill. These cards are easy to incorporate into a literacy center activity or a classroom partner activity.
