Cause and Effect Using Informational Text is a 47 page set of worksheets, handouts and two sets of task cards that are specifically designed to target reading strategies using nonfiction text. It covers Common Core 4.3 and 5.3 (Informational Text) in a way your kids will enjoy and uses topics that will capture their interest.
Here’s what it includes:
2 sets of 32 task cards (a student record sheet and keys)
Cause and Effect Clue Words Handout
Double Sided Worksheets for each type of text (and keys)
1. Deborah Sampson (she disguised herself as a man to fight in the Revolutionary War)
2.The Pony Express
2. The Moon
1. Roller Coaster Physics
2. Making a Diamond Kite
The task cards are a great activity to introduce cause and effect. The first set of 32 cards are bright and colorful with animals and cause and effect situations on each card. The second set has pictures on them and asks students to determine the cause and the effect. It might have a melting ice cream, a flat tire or burnt cookies!
Once you print the task cards, just laminate and cut them out, and you’ll be ready to go! Your task card sets can be used at a center, in small collaborative groups, for one on one work, for early finishers, as a whole class activity (teacher directed), or as a whole class rotating station activity. Simply have the kids use the student record sheet provided, write their answers and then check together.
I really like the worksheets! They were hand selected and written to be ones that your students will really be interested in. Each has an informational text passage on the front side (some with diagrams too) and the back side has a "Cause and Effect" chart with pieces missing for the students to fill in. These are rigorous materials that are great for practice or test prep.
This unit is definitely a great addition to your Common Core Materials!
