Description

These four print-and-go tri-folds target the skill of identifying the cause and/or effect in sentences and reading passages. You can use these cause and effect tri-folds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.

As I was creating these tri-folds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who who needed additional opportunities to practice determining the cause and effect associated with a given event or outcome. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these tri-folds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.

These cause and effect trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH tri-fold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.

Tri-fold #1: The main purpose of this tri-fold is to help students differentiate between a cause and an effect. The first four panels focus on identifying the cause and the effect within a given sentence, while the final panel contains a reading passage. I also introduce a visualization strategy. Many students are confused when a sentence begins with an effect, and ends with a cause. To help these students, I stress that students should visualize the event in their mind before identifying the cause and the effect. Since the cause always happens first, visualization is a very helpful strategy. (This book contains 18 practice sentences and one nonfiction reading passage.)

Tri-fold #2: Book #2 was created with two main objectives in mind. The first three panels are used to introduce students to cause and effect SIGNAL WORDS. The back two panels focus on MAKING INFERENCES. Occasionally, authors expect the reader to infer the cause or the effect, and the passages on these two panels allow students to practice this skill. (This book contains 21 practice sentences and 2 fiction reading passage.)

Tri-fold #3: The primary purpose for this tri-fold is provide opportunities for students to answer cause and effect questions that follow reading passages. Also, the panels in the middle of the tri-fold introduce the fact that events can have multiple causes and/or multiple effects. (Four passages are included in all: two fiction and two nonfiction.)

Tri-fold #4: The main objective for this final cause and effect tri-fold is expose students to multiple choice questions related to identifying a cause or an effect. Students will likely see questions like these on standardized tests. This tri-fold includes 2 nonfiction reading passages and 1 fiction reading passage. Seven multiple choice questions are included in this tri-fold. All of the questions require students to identify a cause or an effect that exists within the matching reading passage.
