Vocab is essential, but it is also often boring and tedious.
Allow students to create their own conceptual knowledge about the causes of World War I, while engaging actively with a group. They will explore their own ideas of the concepts, so that they build a real-world connection to the vocabulary.
Why does this work?
First, students organize and categorize images that represent each of the vocab words.
Next, students create their own names and descriptions for each concept.
Then, students match and revise the actual words and definitions with the categories they had created.
Finally, students create vocabulary notes using their work.
This bottom-up approach to vocabulary allows students to create a mental image of vocabulary before attaching the academic words for the concepts represented.
