UNIT: The Causes of the American Revolution
1. Causes of the American Revolution: Document Based Question (Microsoft Word Document)
2. Causes of the American Revolution: DBQ Graphic Organizer (Microsoft Word Document)
DESCRIPTION: This document-based question contains 6 documents that take the form of visuals, written passages, and imagery. Students are tasked with analyzing each document by answering the critical thinking questions that follow each document in the DBQ in the process of answering the overriding question: What were three British actions that angered many colonists during the time period leading up to the American Revolution? What measures were taken by colonists to protest each of the three British actions you have identified?
Once this step is complete, students pull evidence from each document in order to complete the graphic organizer. This is pre-scaffolded with the first document completed as an example for students to utilize as they begin the analysis/synthesis process.
The essay itself is up to the discretion of the teacher who leverages this activity. I required my students to construct a thesis statement and three paragraphs using their three strongest arguments from the graphic organizer. Thus, they were tasked with citing three documents (one per paragraph) and explaining how this evidence relates to the prompt.
