★ MENTOR SENTENCES & INTERACTIVE ACTIVITIES

Mentor sentences are the perfect way to teach grammar and author's craft through examples of excellent sentences from your favorite read-aloud books!

These can be used as either an add-on to your year of mentor sentences, or used to get started with mentor sentences in your classroom. They do NOT have to be done in the order they are presented in this unit, although I did choose several foundational skill lessons in case you do start the year with this set.

Not familiar with mentor sentences? Read all about them here!

**Watch a video of Mentor Sentences in ACTION!**

If you need more proof that the numerous volumes of mentor sentence curricula created by Ideas by Jivey are a best practice in the classroom, download the case study! The download presents the data collected over the 2016-2017 school year in the form of a case study.

I walk you through each day's lesson for 10 weeks- all the work is done! Each lesson includes the teacher sentence page, directions/guidance for each day for the teacher, the student sentence page for second grade as well as emergent with words out of order (students cut and glue them back in order), a flap activity for the skill of the week, the sentence frame for the teacher imitation, the student imitation page provided with handwriting assistance and without, a class book cover in color and black and white, and a quiz over the week's focus skill (two versions provided: one for emergent students and one for second graders).

★ VOCABULARY

Vocabulary must be taught in context for students to truly understand the words and build relationships with them, and then in turn use them in writing and speaking. Move away from lists of vocabulary words and looking up definitions, and teach students how to comprehend with this best practice bundle! I have provided activities designed on researched best practices for use with popular mentor texts to help you maximize your teaching time. There are open-ended activities and ideas provided that can be used with any words, and I encourage you to incorporate past words in with the current words using these formats for frequent repetition.

*The mentor sentence lessons I have created are adapted from the ideas of Jeff Anderson. These lessons were born from the routine that worked well in my classroom, and the demos and examples I present are variations of Jeff Anderson's methods. This is not the only way to "do" mentor sentences in your classroom.*
