This project is a sculpting project about a celebration or event in one's life. It is an Americanized/modern version of the African Mask that is/was used for rituals and celebrations. Inspired by the reading of the Scholastic Art Magazine, "African Masks" this is my own twist on the project. Presentation is 15 slides including written step-by-step directions as well as photo examples to look at, discuss and be inspired. I have had students really dig deep with this project in the past; one person created a mask about her coming out of the closet to her family, I had several about divorce, I even had one about a girl having a surgery as a little kid and overcoming it. It is really interesting what artistic work comes out of your students when we allow the students this journey into their own selves.
Please see the handouts that go along with this project for purchase for the student requirements and checklist as well as a grading sheet for the teacher.
