Here is your ready-made "Christmas Around the World" type of unit, which can last about 10 days or be adapted to your own time frame!
This 13-page packet includes a reading comprehension page for each of the following winter holidays: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Las Posadas.
(Although Diwali is more like a fall holiday, it shares so many common traditions/themes with the other ones that I still like to include it.)
Each comprehension sheet is organized with the same section headings and similar questions, allowing students to easily compare and contrast the holidays.
Also included are
**Step Up to Writing style outline templates for writing about these multicultural holidays (simpler and more advanced versions)
**A matrix/grid for comparing the holidays as you learn about them
**Recipe links and ideas for hosting a holiday feast in your classroom, with foods from each of the holidays
**A "food critic" form for students to complete as they taste the foods from each holiday
**A list of read-alouds, free video links, and simple crafts for each holiday, to help make a complete unit that's super-easy to implement and incredibly engaging for students!
My students love this unit and gain appreciation for cultural differences, all while practicing their nonfiction/expository reading and writing skills!
