This is a 4 page activity about meiosis and crossing over that contains informational text, instructions to build a model, as well as analysis questions about the model.
Three different versions are included so you can choose which one works best in your classroom, each with its own unique instructions: two options that use paper and one that uses snap blocks (math cubes). The paper options include a preprinted template or an option to use strips of paper instead. This activity does not focus on the specific phases of meiosis, however, it covers the major concepts of crossing over, homologous chromosomes, and genetic recombination.

This model ultimately allows for students to comprehend why crossing over is necessary for genetic variation, and also provides them with a deeper understanding of homologous chromosomes.
