Product Description

Teach about cells with this engaging lab that uses a raw chicken egg and everyday materials! Your students will love seeing an egg’s shell dissolve in vinegar exposing the cell membrane. Students rush to class to see the egg change colors in food coloring while learning about how materials cross a cell membrane.

A raw chicken egg is placed into five different liquids over the course of two weeks (vinegar, water, water with food coloring, salt water, and a liquid their group chooses.) You will love the clear instructions, steps for writing a C-E-R (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) lab report, simple steps for students to create a graph, and the grading rubric. Student samples of completed lab reports are included as well.

Your students will learn...

  • How molecules move across a cell membrane
  • How to use a model to simulate phenomena (observable occurrences)
  • How to collect and record data
  • How to create a graph and drag and drop it into the lab report using NCES Kid Zone Create a Graph- a free online tool: HERE
  • How to create a C-E-R (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) lab report
  • How to take measurements in centimeters

Materials per group (6 students in a group): plastic beaker or transparent container, one chicken egg, vinegar, water, food coloring, salt, flexible measuring tape, computer and internet access to create graph

Next Generation Science Standards want us to dive deep into learning. NGSS MS-LS1-2 focuses learning on 5 cell structures, the cell membrane being one of those.

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):

MS-LS1-2: Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function. [Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall.]

NGSS Crosscutting Concepts:

Structure and Function

Cause and Effect

NGSS Science and Engineering Practices:

Developing and Using Models

Planning and Carrying Out Investigations

Analyzing and Interpreting Data

Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
