In this activity, students construct paper cubes to model three sizes of "cells". Students then measure each cube and calculate its surface area, volume, and the ratio between these two values.
File includes instructions, data table, six follow-up questions, and three sizes of cubes to cut out and assemble.
Additional materials needed:
- Scissors, glue or tape, ruler, calculator (depending on math abilities of students)
Lesson note: In my basic and inclusion biology classes, students check in with me or my co-teacher prior to measuring in order to double-check their surface area and volume formulas.
