This simple laboratory address MS-LS1-2 and "Developing and Using Models" of the NGSS, and all with EASY SUPPLIES!
This lab investigates the question "Is a cell membrane permeable"? Students remove the shell of a chicken egg by soaking it in vinegar for 2 days. This creates a model of a cell that can be used to test the permeability of the cell membrane. Students measure the mass and circumference of the eggs, and then place the egg in 3 different liquids (sugar water, tap water, and salt water). After the eggs have soaked, they measure the change in mass and circumference of each egg. The materials are cheap and easy, the results are dramatic, and the students get to observe a real cell membrane in action. (This procedure is sometimes used to discuss osmosis and diffusion, but this one DOES NOT mention these concepts. This lab focuses on permeability of the membrane in general.)
The lab paper is only 1 page front and back, so your time at the copy machine is minimal. The background information is easy to understand, and the instructions are clear. The analysis is broken down into a simple Claims/Evidence/Reasoning grid. It doesn't get better than fun, effective, and easy!
