Glycolysis in aerobic respiration is a tough process to teach. Many teachers, including myself, struggle with how much detail to go into, what to require of their students, and how to make the lesson more fun than just plain reading a series of reactions off a page. You got to try this activity! Do this instead of lecture about glycolysis and your students will thank you! Check out my preview to see further details and a photo of what the completed activity looks like.
Some teachers don’t go into any detail at all when studying aerobic respiration and just give students the overall reaction. I however believe that the beauty is in the details. I don’t require students to know the details but I do show them the details. That way, they can appreciate the work scientists put into studying this extremely important process.
In this activity, students cut out little rectangles that show products, reactants, enzymes, and step descriptions. Using the step descriptions, they figure out where to put the reactants, products, and enzymes. It is sort of like a puzzle! You will love this activity because it really allows students to discover glycolysis on their own instead of you going over each step on a powerpoint!
Before you have your students do this activity, I recommend giving your students a background on enzymes (I teach energetics and enzymes using a mini-unit before my aerobic respiration unit)
. I also recommend that you give them a basic background on why we study aerobic respiration (it’s how our bodies process food and harvest energy from it, etc).
