This lab to teaches a standard in the North Carolina Essential Standards for Biology that asks students to analyze specific specialized cells. The specific types of cells I have included in the lab are plant vascular tissue, plant storage tissue, photosynthesizing plant cells, muscle tissue, red blood cells, sperm cells, and nerve cells. All of the slides except the potato cells and the photosynthesizing cells were ordered from a science supply company. I made the potato cell slide with a thin section from a potato and iodine stain. The photosynthesizing plant cell came from an Elodea plant I keep in an aquarium. Because many of the cellular features are difficult to see with student microscopes, the PowerPoint may be used as a replacement or booster shot for the actual lab. It’s best to project the slides on a Smart board and draw around the features you want students to observe.
