In this pre-lab, students observe and draw 6 different slides that are preset around the room. These should vary as much as possible, and be divided between various bacterial, plant, and animal cells. Students draw them, and then group them based on any characteristics they decide to use.
After completing this activity, students receive instruction on different cell types, and students revisit their drawings and the microscopes to assess if their groupings were correct, and if not, correct them.
Pre-lab 2 is similar, but students are instead given 3 slides instead, and complete the activity in small groups. This one is less time consuming.
