Instructions for Cello Signs Card Games:
Print 2 or 4 decks of different colours on card stock and cut out.
As there are many concepts covered in the deck, I have found it best to introduce a few cards at a time after exploring their meaning and finding them in songs the students know.
With 2 decks
Deal out all the cards. Leader places a card on the table naming it . The players in turn must place their matching card on top of the first card.
This simple game is an excellent way to introduce young children to the symbols used in music for their instrument.
A more complex version – play as Fish below, but using only 2 decks.
Game time – 10 to 15 minutes.
With 4 decks:
Shuffle all four decks and deal out four cards to each player. Place the remaining cards in the centre. Players pick up their cards. If they have two of a kind, they place them face down in front of them. The first player asks one of the others for a card which he has in his hand. If he receives the requested card he places it, with his own card face up in front of him. If not, he picks up a card from the fish pile in the centre. If this card matches one of the cards in his hand he puts the pair in the centre. The next player then takes his turn.
Players may “steal” cards from one another’s piles if they have the same card in their hand. When they have four of a kind on the table they may turn the cards face down, making the pile “safe” from “stealers”.
The full game, using all four decks takes about one half hour to play. If less time is desired, use only two or three decks.
Game time - 15 to 20 minutes.
