This mini unit is a great introduction to cells. It can be used as a stand alone unit, or supplement some of the activities you already have. Here's what's included:
Activity 1: Build A Cell: Students build either a plant or animal cell either out of edible parts, or other small easily accessible objects. They then make comparisons between the two types of cells to find the main differences between plant and animal cells.
Activity 2: Organelle Foldable: Students learn about the different functions of cell organelles and then create a foldable with this information.
Activity 3: Cell Analogy: This engaging activity allows students to use their creativity to create an analogy to a cell with something of interest to them. This can be done as a cooperative group activity.
Activity 4: The Microscope: Students are introduced to a microscope and all of the relevant parts that allow proper use.
Activity 5: The Onion Cell: Students practice making a slide of an onion skin, and then use a real microscope to observe onion skin cells.
Activity 6: I Have Who Has: Students wrap up the unit by playing I Have Who Has. This serves as a great review of the organelles and their functions. An optional post test and grading rubric are also included.
