Product Description

This quiz is a "text heavy" quiz that is a FANTASTIC way to incorporate literacy into your science classroom while also assessing their knowledge of cell structure and function. Here's how it works:

  1. Divide your students into groups or partners.
  2. Give them the TEXT ONLY portion of the quiz. This is just the text (including diagrams, charts, graphs, etc) that they will have questions on once they take the quiz.
  3. Give the groups/partners roughly 10 minutes to discuss the text after reading it (or maybe while they read it together) and encourage them to utilize any reading strategies/routines that you have implemented in your classroom prior to this quiz (I highly recommend checking out https://readingapprenticeship.org/ if you don't currently use any reading strategies in your classroom!). Not only does this teach them amazing test taking strategies because they will be anticipating what types of questions you are going to ask them but it also increases collaboration in your classroom and shows your cross-curricular approach as an educator (yay you!)
  4. Now pass out the "real" quiz and have them work independently. I allow my students to keep their annotated notes with them as they quiz but you can do it either way.
  5. Watch your quiz scores sky-rocket! Seriously...I have seen up to a 15 point discrepancy between my class that used this quiz taking strategy and my class that did not. It works!

For this quiz:

This quiz has 15 multiple choice questions. The first 8 questions are based on a chart students will interpret to determine cell type for each "unknown" cell. The last 7 questions describe an encounter a student has with 3 protozoan cells while looking under a microscope and the student will answer questions regarding unicellular adaptations and identify these three protozoans.

This product includes:

  • The independent quiz
  • The text only portion of the quiz
  • An answer key

I plan to continue posting more quizzes like this one for all the big topics in Biology so stay tuned for more soon!!! Thank you for supporting me :)
