This is a great whole-class game to use with SMART Notebook software and a SMART board. When playing the game, display in dual-page mode. First, split your class into two "crews" or teams. Alternating crews, pick one random student at a time to come up and select a set of coordinates. The coordinates are linked to separate cells and living systems questions based on Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) 4.5, 5.5 and all of its objectives. Student answers orally and waits for confirmation of a correct answer - then, clicking a picture of a battle ship, is linked out to the Battleship board. Here, they must tap the shade in the same box as their coordinates question. The shade will either reveal a ship (which they happily drag to their crews box) or an empty space. Each time we play, I hide the ships in different locations ahead of time and then close the shades to the grid boxes. Review questions include cell parts and functions, vascular vs. nonvascular plants, vertebrate vs. invertebrate animals, structural adaptations, behavioral adaptations, using a classification key, and more. When I announce our class is going to play Battleship to review for our test, the kids go WILD!
