This is a great lab to do when you don't have access to high-tech lab materials (OR when you just want to get the kids up and moving)!
It requires that students first take their resting breathing rate and heart rate (using their radial pulse). They will then exercise for at least 2-3 minutes. I usually have them run laps but any physical activity would work. Immediately after they stop, they take their breathing & heart rates again. To have the most accurate results, students should exercise twice: once for each active rate. After they collect their data, students must graph it* and then answer a set of analysis and conclusion questions. The questions are available for preview. All of your students will already know that a person breathes heavily after exercise but this lab will allow them to make the connection to cellular respiration. "As the body's need for energy increases, so does it's need for oxygen."
*Graph paper is not included.
