In this lab on cellular respiration, students will observe the gas exchange (carbon dioxide release) that occurs during the reactions of cellular respiration.

Make your science class more fun and interesting by incorporating lab activities into your daily and weekly lesson plans. My students particularly love this lab because it uses red cabbage juice as an acid/base indicator to detect the carbon dioxide that is released during cellular respiration.

Carbon dioxide is released during cellular respiration and is given off as a waste product. Although it is very difficult for us to observe the conversion of glucose to ATP, would it be possible to observe the gas exchange that must take place in order for respiration to be carried out? Do plants require oxygen and give off carbon dioxide just as animals do? These are the questions we will attempt to answer in this lab.

Purpose:
1. To observe the release of carbon dioxide during cellular respiration in animals.
2. To determine if plants carry out the same gas exchange as animals.
3. To observe, record, and analyze the results of an acid-base indicator.

Materials List: Cabbage juice indicator, Test tubes, Drinking straws, Cotton balls, Graduated cylinder, Germinated peas, Dry peas, Rubber stoppers, Test tube rack, Dilute acid, Carbonated beverage


This lab is perfect for any biology or life science class that is studying cellular respiration. It is appropriate for grades 8 - 12.

This lab is easy to set up and easy to take down, and does not require any fancy pieces of lab equipment. Your download will include handouts in both Word document form and pdf form that are ready to be copied and passed out to your students. Student handouts (4 pages) include title, introduction, purpose, safety precautions, procedures, data tables and analysis questions.

Teacher handouts (3 pages) include all set up information including how to mix solutions and how to make the cabbage juice indicator. Sample data is included as well as answers to all questions. I have also included photos showing the lab set up and sample results.
