I learned how to make Celtic Knots when I belonged to a Calligraphy Guild. I typically present this to my grade tens. After learning how to make Celtic Knots, the techniques progress to an Illuminated Initials or Batik assignment. I presented this worksheet to Visual Art Teachers at an Art Teachers conference and received very good feedback. This unit requires students practice patience and precision. Measuring, counting and predicting how laces lay (over, under, or turning) requires great concentration and precision.
Early in the Christian era, the Celtic and Anglo-Saxons of the British Isles perfected their own unique art style. They are responsible for creating decorated manuscripts: the Books of Darrow, the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Books of Kells. I have a DVD I show my students in preparation for this unit, as well as have books with fabulous examples, and of course, student exemplars. You can find such examples online quite easily.
These pages are a good starting point to try Celtic Knot making before progressing to graph paper and making the dots and buttons yourself. Please download the PDF, try it, and leave some feedback as to how effective it is with your students and teaching. Print the first four pages for your students. Page five is a completed page four. Enjoy! I have included Canadian and American spelling for colour/color. Print each page as required.
This presentation will take a class, but the project will take a week.
