Students will need access to the internet to complete this activity. They will go to factfinder.census.gov and find demographic, economic, and social information about the neighborhood in which they live. This activity was created for a sociology course, but it could also be used for social studies courses. It is a good idea to open up a class discussion before students gather information, and ask students the kind of answers they expect to find about their neighborhoods. Afterwards, they can discuss what did or didn't surprise them in their findings. There is a lot of information on this site, and this activity could take up 1-2 class periods.
