This is a student role-play simulation in which teams negotiate during an international crisis involving Rwanda, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the USA, and France.
This simulation requires no special equipment or training and runs in less than one hour of classroom time. It is ideal for learning about African geography, contemporary world history, international politics, and negotiation.
The package includes:
1) Instructor's guide to the simulation, containing complete directions.
2) Instructions for an authentic writing assignment in which role, audience, format are clearly specified for students. Easily-accessible readings for preparatory learning are listed. The instructions are in Microsoft Word so that they can be easily modified to fit the needs of individual teachers.
3) A sample writing assignment for students to use as a model.
The simulation pairs especially well with chapters from Chasing Chaos: My Decade In and Out of Humanitarian Aid by Jessica Alexander (Broadway Books, 2013), but it can be used with any background readings about modern Central Africa.
