This unit inspires students to learn key pieces of information about Central America.
The main project requires a group to create a box and fill it with items that show learning and understanding of key aspects. The rubric included gives the required objects and then allows for groups to make choices about the other items of learning.
The project description, options, and rubric for grading is included.
The box project also requires an Engineer’s Log for the building of the Panama Canal. A cover for this log is included. It can be stapled with blank papers to create the log. Another aspect requires a natural resources map, and the blank outline map is also included in the following pages.
Other projects included in this unit includes an interactive map of Central America and also an interactive map of ancient cultures. Both can be done in a multimedia software such as PowerPoint or HyperStudio. My students used HyperStudio and were able to create buttons that had photos of the area appear when the map was clicked, and then the photo would disappear when the clicked again. Grading rubrics for each interactive map are also included in further pages.
Also included is a rubric for creating a Central American Vehicle. Directions are to draw and label a vehicle that could handle the variety of ecosystems found traveling through Central America. In a written description, explain how this vehicle adapts to the various ecosystems. This has been a favorite activity of students for years!
