This lesson is one I created to help my students prepare for the TN Ready Writing assessment. If you do not live in Tennessee, it can still help your students. The point of the paper is to come up with a central idea that fits one text.
This packet has a worksheet that help students figure out how to articulate a central idea with a description of how to use it in class.
Then there is an outline for the paper, an example paper, and a rubric. The example paper is over the "I Have a Dream" speech. It is three paragraphs: Intro and two body. There is not a conclusion in the example.
The rubric is NOT the TN Ready rubric, but you can use that instead. It also does not include the text of the speeches, but links to the speeches are provided.
