PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Identifying the central idea and supporting details of a reading passage is a skill that students need to practice over and over again. This print-'n-go resource can help!

This engaging lesson helps students learn to identify the central idea of a reading passage with a mini-lesson, 6 original informational texts, and practice sheets galore that you can use with any passage!

Bonus: This mini-lesson also helps students understand the difference between central idea and theme!

This lesson design allows students to work as a whole class, in groups, with a partner, or alone on any given section.

Please Note: If you purchase this resource, please do not purchase "Finding the Main Idea." I have provided both resources for those who have transitioned to "Central Idea" to align with Common Core language. Purchasing both resources would be redundant.

This Central Idea Lesson includes:
-A Lesson Plan Overview

-Worksheets to help teach students how to identify the central idea and how to differentiate the central idea from the theme

-6 original, high-interest texts

-Student Worksheets with graphic organizers

-6 different "Find the Central Idea" worksheets that you can use throughout the school year with any text or passage!

-An enrichment activity

-Answer Key, Learning Objectives, Common Core Standards, Terms of Use

Differentiation is built in with review, scaffolding, graphic organizers, high-interest texts, and a variety of readability levels on texts, making this a perfect mini-lesson for inclusive classrooms.

Note: The enrichment activity prompts students to analyze 3 newspaper, magazine, or internet articles for the central idea. The articles are not included. I choose a variety of high-interest articles, mount them on cardstock, and laminate them so students can use them year after year.
