Product Description
This lesson is one I created to help my students prepare for the TN Ready Writing assessment. If you do not live in Tennessee, it can still help your students. The point of the paper is to come up with a central idea that fits both “9/11 Address to the Nation” by George W. Bush and “The King's Speech” by King George VI.

This packet has:
Two Graphic Organizers that help students figure out how to articulate a central idea. I have a description of how to use the worksheets.

Then there is an outline for the paper, an example paper, and a rubric. The example paper is over the "I Have a Dream" speech from MLKJ and "Glory and Hope" by Nelson Mandela. I do this because if I write it based on the speeches, my students magically end up having the same central idea as me.

The Outline:
The outline is a fill in the blank type format and it has an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

The Example paper:
There is an example with an introduction and ONE body paragraph. Then there is an example Works Cited Page
Next is the same example paper highlighted to show the different parts. It is still only the first two paragraphs. I do that because my students "paraphrase" a lot of what I write, so I just give them enough to know what to do.

The Rubric:
I left the point values open for you to customize it to your class.
The rubric is NOT the TN Ready rubric, but you can use that instead. It also does not include the text of the speeches, but links to the speeches are provided.
