This is an assignment for a ceramic tripod. It is three pages including assignment description, goals, evaluation criteria, photo examples, steps to completion, and getting started with sketching ideas. This project forces students to deal with balance and structure issues when building in clay.
This assignment can be paired with lessons on art history on ancient cultures and how ceramics were used.
This assignment would also be paired with showing handbuilding techniques such as coil pots, attaching features, smoothing clay. It is best as a secondary clay assignment, and not one that you would start with students who have no clay experience at all.
Suitable for high school or older students.
If you see your students every day, approximately 4-5 days of working with the clay would be enough time for this, and then add extra classes to finish painting or glazing.
