Students will be able to bring creativity to the old fashioned book report. For this project, students will create a cereal based on the book they have read. They will decorate the outside of the box with information about the book using creative concepts. The back of the box will contain a summary of the story and the top of the box will contain specific information pertaining to the book, such as title, author, and genre. Students will show knowledge gained of literary devices because the sides of the box will ask students to identify and describe characters of the story and their role as either the protagonist or antagonist. Students will also be asked to identify key story elements and identify devices used such as foreshadowing, flashback, irony, etc. Students will also use the cereal box as a tool for an oral presentation. These boxes make great displays in the hallway and/or around the classroom. I have also hung some from the ceiling.
This activity includes student pages, a rubric, and a page that contains examples of student work.
