I use this project with my business essentials (intro to business) class. It has three parts, making an actual cereal box, a paper and a presentation. In the project sheet it goes over the elements I require on the cereal box and the functions of packaging the students must have for their box. For the paper, I usually have the students write 3-5 paragraphs about their cereal. Example topics for the paper include: how you would advertise your cereal, how you came up with your cereal idea, how you meet the functions of packaging.
Before I start this project I have the students create a 5-10 question survey about cereal. I have them use google forms. Then they have to have 25 people take their survey. That way they can get an idea of the market research component of product development.
Below are my typical guidelines for the paper part:
Content – body paragraphs should be 5-6 sentences.
Introductory Paragraph – give a brief overview of your cereal
2nd Paragraph – go over your marketing and branding information such as your brand name, logo, trade character.
3rd Paragraph – go over your advertising plan for your cereal
4th paragraph – go over your packaging, focusing on the functions of packaging you choose and color scheme of packaging.
Closing paragraph – close up the essay but concluding any other relevant information about your cereal.
MLA Format – include a header, page number & title. Type with 12pt Times New Roman Font
