Product Description

This project focuses on teaching four specific research skills: reading/creating maps, reading photographs and diagrams, notetaking and synthesizing information to create a research project on the plants Indigenous People of Canada find sacred and use for healing, medicine and in their special ceremonies such as smudging and prayers.

Specific instructions are included to teach each of the skills. This project includes maps, photographs, a diagram of the medicine wheel and articles about each of the four sacred plants: sage, sweetgrass, Red Cedar and tobacco. Everything you need for students to create a final project is included except for empty legal size file folders (or poster board in you prefer). You can use your own paper or print our templates.

Some of the students information cards are better if printed in colour, but instructions are included for a workaround if colour printing is not an option for you.

This product was designed to start creating products that are based on concept learning. If can be an extension to the Alberta Program of Studies plants unit in Grade 4 or to learn about Indigenous cultures in social studies.

If you have strong students, it can be used with Grade 4, but we recommend this product for grade 5 and up based on the reading level if you plan to have students work independently. Ideas to accommodate a variety of strengths or weaknesses in reading is included. It has been classroom tested with students in Grades four and five with success, though Grade Four students required extra support.
