PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

My 8th graders, after reading and discussing Chains, by Laurie Halse Andersen, used this chart to organize their thinking about the theme we followed throughout the novel - the quest for freedom. The simple chart lists the main characters - including two unconventional characters - reminds students to keep track of Patriots vs. Loyalists, and requires them to explicitly connect the characters to the development of the theme.

The chart serves as a pre-writing exercise to prepare to students to answer a short essay prompt (also included) about which characters had the most significant impact on Isabel's quest for freedom. The prompt asks students to defend their analysis with details from the book.
