A two-day debate great for pre-reading Chains! This is only the lesson outline page; the full assignment with handouts is available for purchase.
Have students come to class with their US History textbooks, or provide necessary information for them. Divide students into three groups: Loyalists, Patriots, and Fence-Sitters. Have the groups get together and read the historical info to understand their respective positions. Groups should create a list of reasons why their cause is right. They should probably also create a list of major reasons the other side supports its position so that they can anticipate their counter-argument. Fence-sitters should create a list of pros and cons for both positions. These lists can be used for the individual writing activity that follows.
