YOUR CHALK IN ONE HAND…GUN IN THE OTHER
Did you hear the one about a school where if you, a teacher, did not have a gun, they issued one to you, free, and already loaded? Do you know what the “Four Rs” mean? Reading, ’Rightin’, ’Rithmatic and Revolver! Did you know that Joan of Arms is treated like a rock star?
The promise, offered by the National Rifle Association, about three years ago (during the same week, in December 2012, when the nation agonized over the Sandy Hook School, Newtown, Connecticut massacre), that school safety would increase substantially if teachers themselves were armed, has now grown into a national debate.
The objective of this LESSON PLAN is to provide you with current elements in the ongoing controversy about arming—or not arming—teachers. One advisable way to approach this controversy is by pondering, in advance (that is, now), where you stand on this issue, philosophically, morally, and otherwise. The following questions are designed to assist you considerably and give you tools for thought. One day you may have to make a decision about whether you will carry, or avail yourself access to, a loaded gun at the school where you educate children and make your living. Treat this Lesson Plan like a mirror.
