This handout is designed to follow the BBC documentary "Life" episode titled "Challenges of Life"(can be found on YouTube), but it is not a typical video sheet where students will answer questions. Students will be asked to be on the look out for how 13 specific animals handle any obstacles or challenges that come their way via any adaptations or special techniques they use. Also, either during or after the episode, students should select which category the described technique/adaptation falls under (i.e. to obtain food/energy, reproduction, protection, and/or to grow/develop).
Whether or not you choose to use this video sheet for a stand alone activity or as a precursor or follow up to a concept, lesson, or unit of study is up to you. (For instance, I used this episode and handout as an introductory activity before I taught my students about the characteristics of life in biology class). It's also an opportunity for students to simply learn about the other cool inhabitants of planet Earth.
