Students need: Six Boomwhackers (if you don't have Boomwhackers - any instrument/sound/pitch will do), a crayon to match the color of the Boomwhackers, and 1-2 dice.
Fill out the top of the sheet by assigning the Boomwhackers a number on the die. Then - roll the dice! Record the results by coloring in the boxes at the bottom with the color of Boomwhacker the die result shows. There is enough room for 10 "songs"! Have all students pick their favorite song and then play it for the class. (Works well to do in groups.)
Now includes an additional version that uses a staff and requires students to draw in correct pitches, rather than just using colors. This would make the activity more challenging for older students!
Take it further: After the initial rolling, I challenge the students to come up with their own way to randomize their song. For example: Roll the die again to determine whether each note is played loud or soft. Roll the die for each note to determine how many times in a row that note gets played. The possibilities are endless - and you might be surprised with what your students can come up with!
