In 2015-16 I challenged my 4th grade class with this assignment. The projects that they put together far exceeded my expectations. Many of my students put together great ideas and worked with their families and others in their community to make big things happen. One student collected over 10,000 pencils to send to Africa for classes that had to share supplies (one pencil between 7 kids there). Another student turned her birthday party into a food drive for the local homeless shelter. Amazing things happen when you challenge kids to do something extraordinary. They don't see problems in the constraints that adults often do....with kids there are no obstacles. Something magical happened in my class when I presented this project to them and I hope that the same world changing magic ignites within your class as well.
