This study guide is designed to be used with my Changes at the Turn of the Century Test. I used to have my students complete a study guide. I realized that my struggling students who needed the most help, were simply not studying. I created a completed study guide for each unit just to see how it would impact student performance. The results were phenomenal. Parents loved the completed study guides, because they now knew exactly what they needed to study with their child. Kids performed higher, because even my very unorganized students now had a full set of notes to study from. In addition, it freed up class time, to work on more authentic learning activities.

This study guide is also fantastic for new teachers or teachers new to this content, because it provides a summary of what should be taught in regards to each standard. The study guide is not meant to be exhaustive. It provides a brief overview of what should be covered with each standard. This guide is also a great resource for test preparation at the end of the year.

The study guide is designed to cover the 5th Grade Georgia Performance standards listed below but would be applicable for any upper elementary teacher teaching a unit on the changes in America at the end of the 1800's and the beginning of the 1900's.

SS5H3 The student will describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century.
a. Describe the role of the cattle trails in the late 19th century; include the Black Cowboys of Texas, the Great Western Cattle Trail, and
the Chisholm Trail.
b. Describe the impact on American life of the Wright brothers (flight), George Washington Carver (science), Alexander Graham Bell
(communication), and Thomas Edison (electricity).
c. Explain how William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt expanded America’s role in the world; include the Spanish-American War
and the building of the Panama Canal.
d. Describe the reasons people emigrated to the United States, from where they emigrated, and where they settled.
e. Describe the impact of westward expansion on Native Americans; include the Battle of the Little Bighorn and the relocation of
Native Americans to reservations.
SS5G1b Locate important man-made places; include the Chisholm Trail; Pittsburgh, PA; Kitty Hawk, NC.
SS5E1b Explain how price incentives affect people’s behavior and choices (such as decisions to participate in cattle trails because of increased beef prices ).
SS5E1c Describe how specialization improves standards of living, (such as how specific economies in the north and south developed at the beginning of the 20th century).
SS5E1f Give examples of technological advancements and their impact on business productivity during the development of the United States.
