Changing Initial Sounds:
Word Family Houses
Students practice changing the initial sound of words in order to create new words in the same word family. An alphabet is provided along the bottom of each worksheet in order to help students think of new sounds to use in making new words. A parent letter is included to send home explaining the importance of student creating and writing nonsense words while doing exercises such as this one. In addition, a blank house is provided so that teachers may use this activity on word families that might not be included.
I’ve used this as morning work in my classroom and all of my peers are always interested in obtaining copies. This could also be used for homework, literacy centers or for a lesson.
