To change the “y” to “i” or not? This file contains a 7-page flip book that contains the changing spelling rule, examples, and student activities to identify words to change, a checklist to complete, and practice. Just print, cut-out, layer the pages, and staple. The flip book is great to use with individual students, small groups, centers, or even an entire class. You can make one for each student or laminate and make for students to use with a dry erase marker.
The changing spelling rule is used when a base word ends in “y”:
VOWEL TEAM SYLLABLE: Just add the suffix
OPEN SYLLABLES: When adding a vowel suffix, change “y” to “i” and add suffix
EXCEPTION: If the suffix begins with “i”, do not change the “y” to “i”
PLURALS: In an open syllable, change “y” to “i” and add “es”
