This chapter will introduce you to the concept of integers, different strategies for teaching multiplication and division of integers. All students need a strong understanding of what an integer is, how to use them, absolute value, and arithmetic of integers. I have found that breaking from the tradition of teaching addition/subtraction of integers first then multiplication /division and teaching multiplication/division first is a better approach. You will also be given a visual of what multiplication of integers really means and why the sign of the answer is what it is. Integers are presently taught in middle school, but I believe it would be more beneficial to teach integers immediately after division of whole numbers is taught. When it comes to multiplication/division, keep your main goal in mind: Students should be able to multiply/divide integers and determine the sign of the answer. No need to use extremely large numbers.
All students need a strong foundation in integers and multiplication/division of integers in order to be successful in upper level mathematics courses and in life.
