In this chapter, you will be introduced to several different strategies for teaching subtraction of whole numbers. The introduction of different strategies for subtraction will help eliminate the notion that math is one dimensional and boring. If individuals are introduced to different strategies, they will feel as if they are in charge and able to make decisions for themselves as to how they wish to solve a problem. These strategies will also help eliminate some of the math anxiety developed by individuals that are unable to work a problem using the one particular method traditionally taught.

This material will mainly be taught in the early grades, but may be used throughout a student's education to reinforce or improve their addition of whole numbers while adding interest to math. Did you know that they subtract differently in Europe than we do here in the United States.

All individuals need a strong foundation in subtraction of whole numbers in order to be successful in later mathematics courses and in life. Why do so many people immediately grab a calculator to find a sum or difference? They have been taught the one dimensional methods for subtracting whole numbers and feel math is boring. Strategies in this chapter will help students see that math is not one-dimensional and can be interesting and fun. These strategies will also allow the student to make their own decisions on how they work a problem instead of being told how to work the problem with no input from them.
