As art teachers, we are well versed in finding opportunities for students to CREATE art, but more challenging are AUTHENTIC opportunities to reflect on performance art, and interpret artworks.
Gord Downie brings a field trip experience into your classroom with his performance of The Secret Path, and teachers guide students in their thinking and interpretation, through an art exploration.
This lesson provides the emotional context of The Secret Path, to allow your students to interpret other works of art by extending the emotions they each identify.
Through discussion, students clearly share their sympathy/empathy of important indigenous issues, as well as identifying their own emotions towards the topic.
Using the Feldman Method of art interpretation, students provide a short written interpretation. This allows teacher to address the following curriculum objectives:
D2.1 & 2.3 - Interpretation
D2.2 - Analysis
D2.3 - Judgment
D3.2 - Cultural Contexts
