When children independently read chapter books to prepare for their Literacy Circles, it is important to have a job to keep them both focused and responsible for the text. I like to print them out so that each chapter, the students have a different job, but you can have the child have the same job for the whole book if that works better.
Once the kids meet, they will share what they completed for the chapter to fuel their discussion. This can be done independently or with a teacher to keep the group on task. I like to make a booklet for all the chapters in the book at the beginning because it is easier to keep them together.
My 2nd grade advanced readers were able to complete these independently with some support. Proficient students needed more support with time management and working within a group.
