Poverty’s hands are wrapped tightly around Matthew’s neck. All of his other sixth-grade peers seem to have it so easy: iPhones, new, trendy clothing, and friends. A glimmer of hope presents itself when Matthew meets a new student, an Indian girl named Saanvi, and when he gets invited to be a member of an after-school math club. Nevertheless, poverty clasps its hands once again as Matthew finds out that his mom has been fired from her job and that their electricity has been turned off. In an effort to save his family from getting evicted, he must make a decision: should he tutor his bully, Miranda, the same girl who, he thinks, got his mom fired? Or should he continue picking up cans on the side of the road in the dead of winter with his dad?
