Product Description
Need an alternative to chapter quizzes? Want individual student accountability and comprehension that is mutually beneficial to students AND the teacher?

Have STUDENTS divvy up the task of making a study guide for each chapter, using an editable/printable template to answer literal and complex questions about what just happened.

NOTE: This assignment was originally designed for ELA, but it has strong cross-curricular potential for both general non-fiction AND content-area textbooks! This non-fiction edition asks students to not just summarize, but to connect the chapter to its significance to readers, its connections to previous chapters, and how the author strategically supports the main idea or thesis.

Students are responsible for having their assigned chapter study guide ready to go on the day the reading was due, and THEY lead the in-class discussion, based on the pre-written questions they wrote as part of the study guide.

Finally, the study guides can all be compiled into one epic reference that students can use to study for the assessment you will use later in the unit. (PLUS, the study guide asks students to come up with test questions, so your unit assessment might write itself!)

{By the way - make sure you check out the positive ratings from buyers on the fiction version of the study guide assignment!}

This 6-page download includes:
• Directions/overview page for students
• Template for the study guide (to type on OR print and use as a graphic organizer)
• Example of a completed study guide page, based on Ch. 2 of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers (critique it as a class!)
• TWO versions of a Rubric assessing literal and complex comprehension of CCSS RI standards (Ri.1, RI.2, RI.10, and SL.1a).
• Both PDF and editable Word files
