This simple graphic organizer is a content-area teacher's best friend. Assign the Chapter Survey to be completed BEFORE you teach a chapter to your class, and watch how much more receptive your students are to your teaching.
Using the Chapter Survey serves two purposes: you help your students gain some prior knowledge before your teaching, AND, more importantly, you teach your students about the structure of informational text.
The Survey asks students to preview a chapter and pay attention to subheadings, vocabulary words, charts, graphs, and illustrations, and to then generate questions they should be able to answer about the material after reading it.
The Chapter Survey is a great way to support reading in the content area, and a great support for students who are beginning to read informational text independently.
