This activity can be used to begin planning for any character analysis essay (short story, novel, etc). I originally used it when teaching John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men." Students will choose a major character of interest for Part I (page 1) and spend ten minutes prewriting everything they know about this person. After writing, they will highlight key traits they can pull from their brainstorming. On page 2, they will plan out their body paragraphs. After selecting a character and three major traits, they will write down an action or event that relates to this trait and a supporting quote from the text. They will use this prewriting in writing their first full draft of the essay.
