What’s the point?
These graphic organizers cover several important learning standards, including analyzing a character’s internal traits as motivators for their external actions, describing the influence a character’s interactions and relationships with other character(s) have on the outcome of the story, and exploring how a character changes from the beginning to end of a text (and why).
How it works:
As you read fiction books aloud to your students, select and analyze main characters from the text.. Explore the character’s FAST traits (Feelings, Actions, Speech, and Thoughts) and discuss how one trait might affect or influence the others. Stress that while external are more easily seen, internal traits are the ones that define characters (and people) and truly drive their external behaviors. Students can use the variety of graphic organizers included to analyze the characters in any fiction text.
